Ocean-wrapped and snow-capped, this city is full of delightful surprises—and the largest gay population in Western Canada, centered around two communities: the West End and Commercial Drive. Both offer a wide variety of restaurants, coffee shops, pubs, and boutiques, but the ways they offer these amenities are wonderfully different.

Davie Village, part of the residential West End neighborhood, lies at the heart of LGBT life, its bars and dance clubs just minutes from sandy beaches, lovely parks, and gloriously green scenery, all reflected back in the glass facades of Vancouver’s sparkling downtown, visible from here. The West End’s residents tend to be a convivial mix of retirees, immigrants, urban youth, and gay folk, but “The Drive” is distinctly bohemian. Hip, dynamic Commercial Drive is packed with over 400 smaller owner-operated businesses and restaurants, all as ethnically and culturally diverse as this city’s people.

LGBT life is far from relegated to these blocks, though. Find drag shows all throughout town, an LGBT nightclub in North America’s second-largest Chinatown, sample artisan bites at the Granville Market, experience the charm of historical Gastown, shop on Robson Street, or head up to Whistler for pride, skiing, and, in January, both. No matter your interests, Vancouver is unmistakably vibrant.
