In the most populated city in Puerto Rico with the exception of San Juan, “The Noble City” is the governmental seat of the autonomous municipality, the regional hub for various official entities and federal agencies…and a rising LGBT destination. Thanks to stylish new dining and accommodation options, the recent re-opening of a prestigious art museum designed by Edward Durrell Stone of MOMA in New York City, and an increase in gay-friendly nightlife, this southern coast city is a rising star in queer consciousness.

However, it’s been a noteworthy destination for quite some time already. The boardwalk, La Guancha Pasea Tablado, provides access to Caja de Muertos and its pristine beaches and marked snorkel trail, or a glimpse of life as a Ponceño teen or family. The downtown Plaza de las Delicias enchants with fountains, a cathedral, and plenty more people to watch. The buildings may be even more interesting, though. Parque de Bombas, originally built for an exposition in 1882, is a unique red and black wooden historic firehouse, and a Sunday night free concert venue. Museums dedicated to music, history, and Taino culture; live performances at neoclassical Teatro la Perla; a castle that once belonged to the powerful rum-producing Serralles family of Don Q; and plantations round out the cultural wealth of Ponce.

Good to Know

  • Excellent beaches can be found just west: Manglillo Grande, Manglillo Pequeno, and Playa Santa among them
