The least “touristy” of the three American Virgin Islands, St. Croix is also one of the most gay-friendly ones. Crucians are happy to welcome all, and you’ll find that a couple of gay-friendly clubs and gay business guild form the crux of the small community, mostly in Frederiksted. Don’t make those the only reasons you visit the town, though—wander through its original seven street by seven street grid, and take your time doing it to better take its Victorian architecture and historical structures like its 19th century apothecary and church. Mingle with cruisers during peak season and revelers during Carnival, or come any other time for a quieter, more exclusive experience.
You’ll also find a lovely pier there, and exceptional scuba diving, including a wall dive drop-off in Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve, which also features a bioluminescent bay. If snorkeling is more your passion, head just north of the island to Buck Island Reef National Monument; there’s a whole world to explore there. This side of the island will also put you in close proximity to its largest city, Christiansted. Its Danish influence is delightful, featuring five historic structures that commemorate urban colonial development here. If you don’t want to vacation in the past, not to worry—many options for relaxed nightlife are available here, with live music from jazz to rock to reggae to steel drums, and cover charges are unheard of.
