St. Thomas

The most popular, urban, visited, and exciting of the U.S. Virgin Islands, this cosmopolitan cruise ship darling brings much to the table—and not just figuratively. Gourmet dining and lively nightlife complement duty-free international shopping, especially in Charlotte Amalie—locally known as “downtown”—and Red Hook, also called the East End. In the former, the shopping tradition actually stems back to the days of Jamestown, Virginia’s settlement; ships would stop this island’s capital for provisions and goods before continuing onward to the mainland. Danish colonial warehouses add character to the port city’s rich history, and is shown to its best advantage from the deck of the many charterable yachts and sport fishing boats. For views of the vessels, you’ll want to make the trek up Charlotte Amalie’s famous 99 steps, Paradise Peak, Flag Hill, Drake’s Seat, Valdemar Hill. The vistas from Bluebeard’s Castle—one of over 20 historic sites on the island—and cliffside Mahogany Run, a George and Tom Fazio-designed golf course, are equally stunning.

The cerulean sea will be sure to draw you down from the heights, though, and 35 great dive sites including a gorgonian forest, reefs, walls, and wrecks provide plenty of options. Day trips to St. Croix and St. John are just as easy to book as a dive, with plenty of ferry service, but you’ll be hard-pressed to leave the luxurious resorts and abundant dining choices of the brightest star of the U.S. Virgin Islands.
