Looking for a “wild” time? Then make sure you include Kauai in your Hawaiian adventure, an island so untamed that it was the chosen site time and again for the famous Jurassic Park series. Pristine jungle, erupting in every shade of green, overtake the land amid dramatic waterfalls—like the ones from Fantasy Island just north of the capital of Lihue—and wonders like the West Side’s Waimea Canyon, which introduces 14 gorgeous miles of…well, gorges! On the South Shore, home of Poipu Beach Park, humpback whales, green sea turtles, and endangered Hawaiian monk seals steal the spotlight.

Alternatively, go from naturalist to naturist at Donkey Beach, a popular gay beach north of Kapaa—a Royal Coconut Coast town popular for its shopping, dining, and water sports. Another East Side favorite for queer beachgoers is Lydgate State Park, just south of Wailua. Head to the North Shore for Kauapea Beach, the third of the island’s gay beaches and impressively located near the Kilauea Lighthouse; from here, make a romantic trip a once-in-a-lifetime one with an air or boat tour of the towering, remote cliffs of Napali Coast, inaccessible by car. You can easily reunite with civilization in nearby Princeville and Hanalei, though, with upscale resorts in the former and a charming town in the latter. Wilderness? Perhaps not. Wild? That’s up to you.
