Lanai

Free of traffic lights and proud of it, you won’t find a more remote retreat than this former pineapple plantation island. Its few inhabitants are as refreshingly open and accepting of LGBT visitors as any of the bigger islands in this peaceful state, which makes the entire small leisure scene here a gay one.

Two types of guest experiences can be expected here: luxurious leisure and nature-driven adventure. The former finds its place among exceptional resorts and championship golfing; the Four Seasons Resort Lanai is the pinnacle of both. Artist-owned Mike Carroll Gallery is a haven for browsers of fine art, and culinary and musical art find homes at restaurants like Nobu, One Forty, the Dining Room, and others in Lanai City. For the latter, take your pick of off-road four-wheel drives in the misty highland forests or near the white-sand shores; hiking along red lava cliffs; snorkeling or kayaking in pristine waters; sport fishing off the coast; and voluntourism opportunities at partner resorts. Diamond Head Cove Health Bar provides casual, equal refreshment for both types of vacationers, with views of the Oahu crater in the distance.

Good to Know

  • No designated gay scene, but generally inclusive
  • Gay marriage legal since December 2013
