The Big Island

It’s hard to hate in a location as beautiful as this, and Polynesian history proves it. Aikane, or homosexual or bisexual, relationships have long been an accepted tradition since the pre-colonial era, embraced by nobility and common folk alike. Naturally, same-sex marriage in Hawaii has been legal since 2013—years before it became a federal law. With those precedents in mind, it’s no wonder Hawaii has been a haven for members of the LGBT world, as a peaceful, relaxing escape to paradise…and that a wealth of businesses have sprung up during a long history of tourism to specifically cater to them.

Plenty of bars in Kona invite guests to toast gay pride—including the “epicenter of ‘gay’ on the Big Island,” Mask-querade Bar—and the gorgeous beaches are made even more so by being fully inclusive. The local LGBT community often hosts frequent events on the shores of Hilo, Kailua, and Kona, but no invitation is needed to “Gay Day” Mondays at clothing-optional Kehena Beach, LGBT-favorite Wailea Bay Beach, and Honokohau Beach at the northern end of the Honokohau Harbor Trail. Every corner of this island is worth the trek, with nature preserves, water sports, botanical gardens, historical sites, charming fishing villages, breathtaking vistas, astronomical observatories, and the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park abounding. Add to that the annual PRIDE Parade & Festival, a family-friendly event sponsored by the Hawaii Legacy LGBT Foundation, and there’s no doubt that there’s just “no h8” on this big, happy island.

Good to Know

  • Lively and actively expanding gay scene
