Only 4.3 miles separate Ixtapa and Zihuatenejo, but travelers to the state of Guerrero are treated to two very different experiences when visiting these sister resort towns. “Zihua” is the more low-key of the two, a quaint fishing village full of winding streets of galleries, folk art shops, and beachfront palapa-style seafood restaurants. Former coconut plantation Ixtapa features a Hotel Zone studded with high-rises, all-inclusive resorts, and upscale shopping.

Regardless of which destination you choose to stay in, do yourself a favor and be sure to visit the other as well. Both are gay-friendly, with restaurants like Casa Morelos, Tequila and Chile, Chili Beans, The Blue Shrimp, and El Infierno de la Gloria eager to serve LGBT visitors and make them feel welcome. Dance off your meals at Christine and Pescados Ixtapa, or snorkel among cat sharks in Las Gatas Beach and call it your workout. Looking to dive deeper into these bright blue waters? Experienced divers head to Los Morros de Potosi’s granite rocks, cave network, and vertical walls.

Good to Know

  • Small but active gay scene
  • Increasingly popular for destination weddings; ceremonies can be performed here
  • Same-sex marriage is legal throughout Mexico
