Mazatlan

A more recent entrant into Mexico’s international tourism scene, “The Pearl of the Pacific” offers old-fashioned charm with streets lined with pastel and wrought iron-accented restored mansions, shady plazas, cafés, and a cultural diversity that’s best heard rather than seen. Banda, a musical fusion of Latin/German-polka styles, is unique to the Sinaloa state, and a strong history of theater and opera is a trademark as well. On the more modern side of sound, Vitrolas Bar, set in a restored historical building, offers karaoke on set nights, and gay, electronica disco Passion Club VIP brings the heat indoors. For the ultimate dance party in Mazatlan, though, Carnaval is not to be missed. Its version is the largest in the country, complete with a beauty pageant.

Year-round, seven miles of beachfront in the Golden Zone, 12 miles of boardwalk—one of the longest on the Pacific Coast—fantastic fishing and golfing, plus a beautified historic city center attract all visitors.

Good to Know

  • Small gay scene, but growing
  • Popular for destination weddings; ceremonies can be performed here
  • Same-sex marriage is legal throughout Mexico
