Make seven your lucky number during your stay in central Phoenix, and you can be sure you won’t miss one beat. The LGBT nightlife, bars, and clubs are mostly concentrated between 7th Avenue and 7th Street, making that all you need to know to have a fantastic time in this desert flower’s Melrose District. But of course, don’t limit yourself to just that area during your visit; you’d be doing a disservice to the city that played host to the first gay rodeo in Arizona—the fifth state in the country to do so—and whose downtown area boasts more gay bars per capita than anywhere else in the United States.

In that part of town, major developments and projects such as Copper Square have made Phoenix a hotbed of activity. Arts and performances flourish, golf is everywhere, and a dearth of professional sports teams—and fans!—make it easy to spark up conversation. Material girls and boys can shop ‘til they drop at the many unique malls, boutiques, and antique stores…or trace the latter back to their sources as they wander the architecturally magnificent historic districts throughout the city. No matter the focus of your day, an undercurrent of pride will run through it all. A lively and active LGBT community is to be thanked for throwing three of the biggest and most exciting events in the state: Phoenix Pride; “Arizona’s Greatest Street Fair,” the two-day Rainbows Festival; and the Road Runner Regional Rodeo. As for the everyday, a growing number of queer-friendly churches, heavily gay residential neighborhoods, and plenty of publications and resources—including AGRA, the state’s official gay rodeo association—are a testament to the culture that makes Phoenix so phenomenal.

Good to Know

  • Lively and actively expanding gay scene
  • LGBT businesses not set to a specific neighborhood, but concentrated in the Melrose District
  • Generally inclusive
  • Gay rodeo culture and pride are extremely prevalent here
  • Gay marriage legal since October 2014
