Ft. Lauderdale

At the center of Ft. Lauderdale beats a queer heart: Wilton Manors, a town in and of itself, beautifully bounded by this popular tropical city. Named the “second-gayest city in the U.S.” by a recent federal census, this two-mile sub-destination is not only home to a progressive population, but also 40 restaurants, lounges, and nightclubs on Wilton Drive alone. Many of them are LGBT-owned, but throughout Ft. Lauderdale—especially with 100+ gay-owned bars, restaurants, guesthouses, and clubs in the city proper—all are LGBT-friendly.

Likewise are the hundreds of stores, from artisan craft stalls to trendy boutiques, scattered throughout the city. The downtown Riverwalk arts and entertainment district is not to be missed, and the Festival Flea Market has practically everything under the sun under one roof. Las Olas Boulevard, a pedestrian-friendly shopping district, is literally under the sun. Weave in and out of over 30 options for trendy alfresco eating and drinking and 65 stores to tan while you shop; shop ‘til you drop…because once you’re ready to do just that, there are 23 miles of sandy coastline with your name on it. Three beaches in particular are popular among LGBT residents and visitors: Sebastian Street, winner of the popularity contest; Haulover Beach, one of the top legal clothing-optional beaches in the country; and the 18th Street Beach, a quiet refuge at the north end. If you’re ready to tie the knot, why not pop the question there? After all, Ft. Lauderdale has the highest number of same-sex couple households in the country—let them inspire you to add one more.
