Ft. Myers

If your preferred scene is not a “scene,” this may be the destination for you. In Ft. Myers, neighborhood bars are casual, crowds are small and friendly, islands are desolate but for the birds and manatees, and beaches are sprawling. Only a few hours away from Miami, Orlando, and Key West—or a very short drive from Port Charlotte—there’s much that draws visitors from those nearby locales and others around the world.

The downtown River District forms the center of it all; take a guided tour of this historic area by making a reservation with the Southwest Florida Museum of History. Stroll along the Caloosahatchee River and walk in the footsteps of Calusa Indians and the Spaniards that once conquered this land. Or, explore stunning estates such as those of Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Nature lovers will find just as much to see, from kayaking in the Four Mile Cove Ecological Preserve to Manatee Park and its butterfly garden, J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge—the largest undeveloped mangrove ecosystem in the nation—and more.

But if it’s more worldly pursuits you’re after, there’s plenty of that here, too. Shop, shop, shop at the “Best Shopping Center in Southwest Florida,” Miromar Outlets, where 140 stores await to fill your suitcase. After all, you’ll need something you can dance in when you visit the multi-level Bottom Line club, whose weekend events include drag shows. Pick up an outfit for your moment in the spotlight at Tubby’s, a low-key video bar owned by the operators of the famed Green Lantern gay bar in New Orleans’ French Quarter. You won’t even have to hustle up a cover charge to sing a cover on karaoke nights. Office Pub is even more casual, and there are plenty of other options that offer a signature mix of relaxed vibes and drag show fun; come down to choose your own “non-scene.”

Good to Know
