Marathon

Keep your eyes on the road! There’s seven miles of glorious overwater views to drink in on Marathon’s gawk-worthy bridge to the Lower Keys…but there are three reasons to stay right where it starts: Bahia Honda State Park, Sombrero Beach, and Coco Plum Beach. Although none of these are exclusively gay, they’re all inclusively wonderful, welcoming all visitors—especially the turtles who nest on the latter beach. They’re such beloved visitors, actually, that the only licensed veterinary hospital that specializes in sea turtles is located right here in Marathon. Stop in to tour the rehab facilities and feed these darling swimmers. Not far from there is the Dolphin Research Center, which welcomes over 70,000 visitors annually to Grassy Key—another eco-experience not to be missed.

Back to the beaches: Sombrero also offers a quiet, relaxing experience, plus a spaciousness few other shorelines in the Florida Keys can rival. But if we’re getting competitive, Bahia Honda may take the top honors. Considered one of the most stunning, world-class beaches in all of America, this strip of sand in a region prone to pebbles is a true gem. Find more along the shores scattered throughout Marathon’s ten miles, along with 19th century fishing-town charm.

Good to Know

  • No designated gay scene, but generally inclusive
